Rutabaga is a kind of turnip and part of the nutrient rich and health promoting cabbage family of vegetables. Potatoes are also delicious and nutritious and by combining them with rutabaga you get a double whammy of nutrients, anti-oxidants and unique flavour profile. Enjoy the mash topped with a delicious saucy pasture raised meat stew.
In a medium sized pot, warm 1 tablespoon Olive Oil over medium heat. Add garlic, sea salt and black pepper. Mix around with a spatula for a minute or so.
Add the rutabagas, potatoes and stock. The stock should just cover the rutabagas. Set heat to high and get them boiling for 30 seconds before lowering the heat to low and simmering for 15-20 minutes stirring occasionally or until potatoes and rutabagas are softened.
Remove from heat and begin to mash potatoes and rutabagas with a masher. Gradually add butter and cream to reach desired consistency. Add salt and pepper to taste.
